Bamberg
Bamberg is a small city of about 80,000 people located in northern Bavaria, or more accurately, in Franconia. I lived in Bamberg while I studied at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität in 2006. I've since returned to Bamberg in 2009. You can find a collection of all of my photos from Bamberg linked below.
Around Bamberg, Altenburg and Kloster Banz
Returning to Bamberg was a lot of fun. It was nice to be back as a tourist and not a student. It wasn't like I was on a strict schedule when I was studying in Bamberg but this time around it was just a lot more relaxing. So with no real itinerary, we were free to make our own way around town. After a day and a half in Bamberg we met up with Bastian, a German friend who just returned from Italy.
Bamberg Day One
After spending a day and a half in Munich, and nearly a full day in Passau, we headed for Bamberg. Bamberg is where I spent the better part of 2006 as a student, so it's been about three years since I was there. Here are the pictures from our first day in Bamberg. Below is Bamberg's Altes Rathaus, the old town hall, which is built in the middle of the Regnitz river.
World Cup Viertal Finale at the Allemania Fraternity in Bamberg, Germany

Bastian and I watched the Viertal Finale (Quarter Final Round) of the World Cup at the Allemania Fraternity in Bamberg. The following pictures were taken with my cell phone.
Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi) in Bamberg and Catholic mass at the Cathedral
Fronleichnam is the German name for the feast of Corpus Christi. In mid June of 2006 I was able to see the Fronleichnam procession in Bamberg Germany. Here are some of the pictures from procession. There were many idols and displays carried through the streets of the Altstadt toward the Kaiserdom.
The Bamberg Cathedral and St. Michaelsberg. Tombs of Heinrich II, Kunigunde and Otto der Heilige
Bamberg is a diocese and, as such, is the seat of the Bishop of Bamberg. The Erzbistum Bamberg (diocese of Bamberg) was established in 1007 and the first cathedral in Bamberg was built in the year 1012. Saint Michaelsberg, the largest monastery in the area was founded in 1015 by Benedictine monks. The church at Michaelsberg houses the tomb of Saint Otto of Bamberg.
Schloss Seehof, the Bishop's lake palace, in Gereut near Bamberg, Germany
In early June '06 I started riding my bike from the wohnheim on Pestalozzistraße in Bamberg to Schloss Seehof in the early mornings for exercise. Schloss Seehof is a baroque palace about twenty minutes from Bamberg by bike. The palace is actually just outside of Gereut, a small village surrounded by fields and farms. Seehof isn't an incredibly large complex, at least not when compared to some of the other estates in the region. There is an impressive garden on the grounds and a couple of lakes behind the palace with statues throughout.
