Around Bamberg, Altenburg and Kloster Banz

Returning to Bamberg was a lot of fun. It was nice to be back as a tourist and not a student. It wasn't like I was on a strict schedule when I was studying in Bamberg but this time around it was just a lot more relaxing. So with no real itinerary, we were free to make our own way around town. After a day and a half in Bamberg we met up with Bastian, a German friend who just returned from Italy.

Here is Bastian with his BMW M5, he met up with us in Bamberg and offered to take us around and see a few of the sites that were outside of the city center.

We decided to get dinner at Kloster Banz, a local pilgrimage stop.

On the autobahn, doing just over 210 kilometers per hour.

Mönchshof from Kulmbach

After dinner beers at Fäßla in Bamberg.

Altenburg in the morning.

Altenburg is a small castle at the top of hill just west of Bamberg.

From Altenburg you can see the yellow fields of Rahm to the west of Bamberg. These yellow plants are used for making oil and butter.

Altenburg's manor, inside the castle walls. This hall is used for wedding receptions and other private functions.

There used to be a captive bear at Altenburg, now the cages house a few stuffed teddy bears.

After leaving Altenburg we drove east to Memmelsdorf and stopped at Schloss Seehof.

Schloss Seehof is the former palace of Bamberg's bishop, now it is owned by the state.

Statues in the former stable house at Schloss Seehof.

Perseus with Medusa's head

Sarah and I at the fountain behind Schloss Seehof. Thanks Bastian.

Meanwhile, back in Bamberg...

Bastian and I at Spezial just before Bastian had to leave town and get back to Frankfurt for a job interview.

Stairway to heaven, inside Saint Michaelsberg

Walking through the tomb of Saint Otto

It's said that walking through Otto's tomb will permanently cure your back pain. I did this three years ago so I wonder if this cancels it out?

Saint Michaelsberg is lined with statues and plaques commemorating former church leaders from 16th and 17th centuries.

The skeleton statues date from the time of the great plague.

The windows at Saint Michaelsberg.

Back in Bamberg's altstadt. The sign welcomes cyclists.

The Weyermann malt factory in central Bamberg. This place roasts malt and barley for breweries and looks very Wonka-esque. On a side note, earlier this year when we went on the Boulevard Brewery tour in Kansas City, I couldn't help but notice a bag of Weyerman malts on display in the brew house.
