Bamberg Day One

After spending a day and a half in Munich, and nearly a full day in Passau, we headed for Bamberg. Bamberg is where I spent the better part of 2006 as a student, so it's been about three years since I was there. Here are the pictures from our first day in Bamberg. Below is Bamberg's Altes Rathaus, the old town hall, which is built in the middle of the Regnitz river.

Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Oberfranken, the northeastern most part of Bavaria.

This is the view from room four at the Spezial Brewery near Bamberg's old center. Spezial is a working brewery and restaurant that has a handful of rooms for rent.

Brauerei Spezial is one of eight breweries in Bamberg, a town of about 75,000 people. Spezial is best known for their Rauchbier which is made from smoked malt.

Bamberg's altstadt along the river Regnitz. You can see another one of Bamberg's brewerys, Klosterbräu, on the right hand side.

The old mill house on the Regnitz.

Barbara Kohn Förtsch's flower shop in Bamberg's altstadt.

A statue on the Obere Brücke.

An archway outside of Bamberg's cathedral. The building behind the figure in the middle is the Bamberger Dom.

Inside the cathedral is the tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and Queen Kunigunde. Heinrich II was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1002 to 1024. Heinrich and Kunigunde were canonized as saints in 1146 and 1200 respectively.

Bamberg is unique in Germany in that its cathedral houses the remains of Pope Clement II who died in 1047.

This bishop has the best looking sarcophagus in the whole place. The inscription was in latin though so I couldn't figure out who exactly it is.

This unlabeled relic was displayed in the cathedral's crypt. It looks like a small arm bone.

While walking around Bamberg we happened upon the dedication ceremony in a small square in the old town. The blond headed guy in the center is Andreas Starke, the mayor of Bamberg.

Gerhard Schröder, former Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005, was there to give a speech about the artist and his modern take on Apollo.

The statue was titled "Apoll" which is the German name for Apollo, the Greek god of music and poetry.

Apoll and Markus Lüpertz, the artist, he's the bald guy with the grey beard in the lower right.

There was a protestor on hand was well. The sign says "Bamberg's courage illustrated as ugliness" and "scares children."

In the display window of a butcher shop. The sign says they'll gladly pack their sausages for travel.

Snacking on a Käsestranger, a cheesy breadstick from the bakery.

Meanwhile, back at Spezial...

For dinner we ate downstairs are Spezial. Being a traditional place, Spezial had the standard brats and sauerkrat...

We ordered a plate of rostklöße mit eier which is grilled dumplings and fried egg.

...and a plate of weiß spargel, white asparagus with hollandaise sauce.

Spezial's Weisse, a malted wheat beer with a tart and almost banana flavor.

Spezial Rauchbier. On tap the Rauchbier isn't a smoky as it is in the bottle. If you're looking for a super smoky beer then you may want to try Schlenkerla, Bamberg's other Rauchbier brewery.
