Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi) in Bamberg and Catholic mass at the Cathedral

Fronleichnam is the German name for the feast of Corpus Christi. In mid June of 2006 I was able to see the Fronleichnam procession in Bamberg Germany. Here are some of the pictures from procession. There were many idols and displays carried through the streets of the Altstadt toward the Kaiserdom.

The procession to the Cathedral started in the Maximillianplatz, the large square in the Grünermarkt about a kilometer away from the Kaiserdom.

The procession made it's way through the Rathaus, people lined both sides of the route from beginning to end. There were loud speakers playing hymns in Latin during the event

At the head of the procession is the Cathedral congregation, each separate group has a standard like the green rectangular sign, it says Dompfarrei (Cathedral Parish)

These two kids still had German flags on their cheeks, face paint from the World Cup match the night before - Germany beat Poland 1-0

Going up the hill to the Dom

Some of these things were huge, this one was carried by 16 guys

Catholic fraternities, the University has a large theology department - the offices of which are part of St. Martin's Parish

The best picture I could get of the Bishop, he was under an awning and had the cross relic against his forehead the whole time. Before the mass, another priest opened the center part of the relic, took something out and held it up then everyone clapped and he placed whatever it was back in the center glass compartment, no one ever said what it was exactly

Nuns, at the end of the procession. All of the spectators made their way to the Domplatz as the procession ended. Most people didn't wait for the nuns to go by but just cut in front of them instead
