Our last afternoon in Germany was spent touring the Juliusspital wine cellar in Würzburg.

This is the chandelier in the entrance to the tunnels below Juliusspital. Juliusspital was founded in 1576 as a catholic hospital which was funded by the winery's proceeds.

The cellars under Juliusspital were city-block long corridors lined by oval shaped casks.

Our tour of the wine cellar was also a guided tasting.

Juliusspital, like the other wine estates in Würzburg, specialize in white wines such as Riesling and Silvaner.

Many of the wine barrels were intricately carved. This barrel commemorates the 400th anniversary of Juliusspital in 1976.

This barrel was carved in 2002 and illustrates the curative properties of wine... with sick people at the top of the barrel, wine drinkers in the middle and lively figures celebrating toward the bottom of the barrel. Also, note the woman standing to the left of the barrel, the barrel is about twice as tall as her.

Our guide was describing the cleaning process and said that workers need to climb inside the barrels to scrub it down. This guy decided to climb inside the giant wine barrel.

In the cellar show room, a commemorative bocksbeutel from 2006 when the World Cup came to Germany.

"Zum Wohl"

Souvenirs from Würzburg, miniature bockbeutels full of Silvaner from Staatlicher Hofkeller, Bürgerspital and Juliuspital.

Well, that's it. These last nine updates pretty much sum up our week in Germany. There are many more pictures I may end up posting but for now I'll leave it at this:

Auf wiedersehen Deutschland, bis nächstes mal.
